What happens when we let our money and things become our roadblock?

Many of us desire to build a "good life", which includes getting an education and going into a career that can provide us with a strong income. We are taught by the world that we are better off the more we have. We rank society by the amount of money one has, whether the result of their job or the family into which one is born. Working hard is noble and scripturally sound teaching, as is providing and financially caring for your family.
So what are the dangers of money? Are these things not good? The more we have the better we are – right?
In Mark 10, Jesus came across a wealthy young man that was eager to know what else would be needed to inherit eternal life. He told Jesus that he had done everything the law required. He had kept the commandments.
Jesus confirmed that he did indeed know the commandments. Then it says that “Jesus looked at him and loved him.” “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then, come follow me.”
What? Does this mean that Jesus wanted him to get rid of everything he owned? YES!
“Jesus looked at him and loved him.” He loved him so much that He wanted to have a relationship with him of which nothing would be allowed to get in the way. But Jesus knew that the man’s heart was entangled with his money.
For us to follow Christ, we must get rid of everything that is in the way. Jesus is saying that “your wealth, your stuff, your doing, your job, your position in society – None of this matters! What matters is Me!” (paraphrased).
Jesus told him, “Then, come follow me.” Jesus knew that what He offered what was so much greater than anything wealth could ever buy. Yet, the enticing lust and entrapment of worldly wealth can create such a stronghold that we cannot see the true source of joy, comfort, and contentment, which is Jesus Christ. American’s wealth today is a tremendous roadblock!
Jesus then told his disciples, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” What? That seems impossible for our little human mind. That is how easy it is for us to fall in love with the temporary happiness, security, and comfort that worldly wealth may provide.
The more we have the more our “money and possessions” are likely to become our master, our idol. This is so destructively dangerous!!!
What is blocking YOU from following Christ? Chasing the American Dream? Striving for a leisurely, self-indulged retirement? Living in a very self-centered world? Only you can answer that question.
